Types of surface dressing

  • Single dressing: The most affordable option, ideal for roads showing early signs of wear. We apply bitumen binder and cover it with a layer of compacted aggregate.
  • Double dressing: A stronger dressing that’s better for heavily trafficked roads. Involves two layers of binder and aggregates to fully protect worn surfaces.
  • Pad coat dressing: Preliminary dressing for uneven road bases that helps later treatments bond. A light application of binder and small chippings is followed by a full dressing.
  • Racked dressing: Best for fast or heavy traffic to reduce the risk of loose aggregate. Large chippings are locked in place with a second layer of smaller stones.
  • Sandwich dressing: Improves grip on steep roads or those with excess binder. We apply aggregate before and after the adhesive layer to better control binder movement.

Surface dressing FAQs

What is road surface dressing?

Surface dressing is a preventative maintenance technique that extends surface lifespan and delays the need for more costly resurfacing.

It involves applying a layer of bitumen emulsion and stone chippings to an existing surface that’s still in good condition. This seals the road surface, restoring skid resistance and improving appearance.

Both affordable and effective, surface dressing is widely used for roads, driveways and car parks.

How often should I get road surface dressing?
You should schedule road surface dressing as soon as you spot warning signs like low traction, cracks or uneven camber. But even if you can’t see any damage, it’s best to arrange surface dressing every seven to 10 years. This guards your road against future harm and saves you money in the long run.
How does road surface dressing work?

We start by spraying your existing surface with hot bitumen emulsion. Then we spread graded stone chippings on top and embed them into the binder using a roller. Traffic also helps bed in the chips.

Finally, we sweep away any loose stones, leaving you with a durable, skid-resistant surface.

How long does surface dressing take?

Surface dressing is a very quick process, especially compared to full resurfacing.

We can treat small areas like driveways or short road sections in just a few hours. And even larger roads only take a few days depending on the size.

After dressing, your surface should be able to handle normal traffic flow within minutes to an hour. So motorists and other road users only experience minimal disruption.

How much does surface dressing cost?

Typical surface dressing costs around £3-£5 per square metre, depending on the volume of traffic.

This is much, much cheaper than full resurfacing, which can cost £25-£35 per square metre even for more affordable asphalt surfaces.

That makes surface dressing roughly 5-10 times cheaper!

How long does surface dressing last?

Professionally applied surface dressing can extend the lifespan of your surface by up to 10 years depending on traffic volume and weather conditions.

You can dress a surface up to 3 times before it needs resurfacing. That means you can more than double the lifespan of most well-kept surfaces!
