Why is it so important to choose the right size skip?

When you need to order a skip, you might not think the size of it is too important. However, if you want to get the most out of your skip hire and avoid any problems, choosing the right type is critical.

If you order a small skip, you might find you can’t get all your waste in it. This means you have to pay more for the skip to be emptied and brought back., or for a second skip to store any surplus waste. An overly full skip can also be too dangerous to move, meaning you have to take items out before it can be driven away.

Conversely, if you choose a skip that’s too big, you’re wasting money on space you won’t use. – you may be tempted to dispose of things you don’t need to or can recycle instead. You may also have additional issues placing the skip – larger skips can’t be set on the public highway.

If you plan to fill the space though, a larger skip is a more cost-effective option than a smaller one.

Skip and roll-on roll-off bin sizes: the ultimate guide

In a world of kilometres and kilograms, you might be interested to know that skips still use the imperial system! Skip sizes are measured in ‘cubic yards’ or ‘yards’.

A cubic yard is 3 feet high, 3 feet wide, and 3 feet deep (or 0.9 metres x 0.9 metres x 0.9 metres) – so a total volume of 27 square feet (or 8.2 square metres). This is the equivalent of about ten full bin bags.

So if you have a rough idea of how much waste you need to dispose of, you should have a good understanding of what type of skip is right for your needs.

Here are some of the typical skip and roll-on roll-off bin sizes you can hire. We offer all these skip sizes at Hazel & Jefferies, so if you know what you want, why not book your skip online?

4 cubic yard skip

Ideal for: Small domestic projects

Capacity: 40 bin bags or equivalent bulky waste

If you’re carrying out a DIY project at home, like giving the garden an overhaul, tidying up the loft, or refurbishing the bathroom, a 4 cubic yard skip is ideal.

One of the smallest skips available, this skip fits neatly on your driveway, meaning you don’t need to arrange a permit from your local council.

Bear in mind that this skip can’t be filled with heavy waste like rubble or bricks. So if you need to put these in your skip, you’ll have to hire a larger one.

6 cubic yard skip

Ideal for: Small building projects

Capacity: 60 bin bags or equivalent bulky waste

Many builders use 6 cubic yard skips for small projects. This is because it’s an affordable option, can be placed on the highway, and can be filled with construction waste.

This type of skip is called a ‘builders skip’ for a reason!

8 cubic yard skip

Ideal for: Larger domestic and building projects, commercial use

Capacity: 80 bin bags or equivalent bulky waste

This is one of the most popular skip sizes in the UK and has a wide range of uses. Our customers use them for building work, getting rid of commercial waste, and large domestic projects like household clearances.

It’s important to note that this is the largest skip size that can be placed on the highway. Anything larger, and you’ll need to put it on private land like a car park or field.

12 cubic yard skip

Ideal for: Commercial waste disposal

Capacity: 120 bin bags or equivalent bulky waste

Often referred to as a ‘maxi skip, while a 12 cubic yard skip isn’t ideal for domestic properties, it’s perfect for commercial use. Offices, factories, and warehouses across the Oxfordshire area hire our 12 cubic yard skips.

20 cubic yard roll-on roll-off bin

Ideal for: Large construction projects

Capacity: 200 bin bags or equivalent bulky waste

Roll-on roll-off (Roro) bins differ from skips as they are fully contained and rectangular rather than sloping. This makes them ideal for stacking waste.

When Roll-on roll-off bins are full, they are rolled onto a hydraulic flatbed truck, hence the name!

A 20 cubic yard roll-on roll-off bin is often used on industrial and commercial sites. They are designed for long-term use, where they are filled up and removed when they are at capacity.

40 cubic yard roll-on roll-off bin

Ideal for Large construction projects and long-term waste disposal

Capacity: 400 bin bags or equivalent bulky waste

The largest bin on offer, a 40 cubic yard roll-on roll-off bin can contain pretty much any type of waste, from cardboard and paper to window frames and doors!

Like the 20 cubic yard version, this bin is excellent for long-term waste management as it works out cheaper than commercial waste collection solutions.

What Is The Cost Of Hiring A Roll On Roll Off Skip?

The cost of hiring a Roll On Roll Off skip depends on a number of factors, including the size of the skip, the duration of the hire, and your location. It’s worth noting that you may also need to pay for a permit if the skip needs to be placed on a public road, and there may be additional charges for certain types of waste. However, Roll on Roll off skips are not often used or recommended for domestic use

Are there any other skip sizes available?

40 cubic yards is typically the largest skip size you can get from a commercial skip hire provider.

However, you can get different-sized skips from other providers if needed. For example, some businesses offer a 2 cubic yard skip for smaller domestic jobs.

We chose the sizes of skips we offer following extensive feedback and discussion with our customers. However, if you want a specific skip size for your project, please get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do!

Efficient Loading and Safety Tips

Tips for Loading a Skip

Efficiently loading your skip can help you maximise space and minimise costs. Here are some tips:

  • Distribute Weight Evenly: Ensure that the weight inside the skip is evenly distributed to prevent imbalance.
  • Break Down Large Items: Disassemble large items whenever possible to optimise space.
  • Avoid Overloading: Stick to the skip’s weight limit to prevent damage or accidents.

Safety First Skip Loading

Safety should be a priority when dealing with skips. Follow these safety guidelines:

  • Wear Appropriate Safety Gear: When loading the skip, wear gloves, safety goggles, and appropriate clothing to protect yourself.
  • Prohibited Materials: Never place hazardous materials like asbestos, chemicals, or batteries in a skip.
  • Local Safety Regulations: Adhere to local safety regulations and guidelines to ensure a safe waste disposal process

Environmental Responsibility

Responsible waste disposal involves more than just using the right skip. It also means considering the environment. Here’s how you can dispose of waste in an environmentally friendly manner:

  • Recycling: Separate recyclables from general waste to minimise landfill contributions.
  • Reuse: Consider donating usable items instead of discarding them.
